Reference Number vs Consumer Number: What's the Difference?

Confused about which number to use to check your electricity bill? Here's the difference between a reference number and a consumer number, and how to tell which one you have.

Pakistani electricity bills use two different identifiers depending on your DISCO and how recently your account was set up or your meter replaced. Both work on CheckBillsOnline.pk without any extra configuration - but knowing which one you're looking at helps when a bill lookup doesn't work on the first try.

Reference Number (14 digits)

A reference number is a longer, typically 14-digit identifier tied to the physical meter and billing account. It's the older, more established format and is still standard for large parts of the MEPCO, GEPCO, and FESCO networks. It appears near the top of the printed bill, often labelled 'Reference No.' or 'Ref No.'.

Consumer Number (10 digits)

A consumer number is a shorter, 10-digit identifier introduced more widely alongside smart meter rollouts. LESCO and IESCO have moved a large share of their customers to this format. It's usually labelled 'Consumer No.' on the bill and functions identically to a reference number for lookup purposes.

How to Tell Which One You Have

Count the digits on your last printed bill:

  • 10 digits → you have a consumer number
  • 14 digits → you have a reference number
  • Either format works directly in the search box on CheckBillsOnline.pk - just enter the digits and select your DISCO

If Neither Number Works

Occasionally an account's identifier changes after a meter replacement or a switch to smart metering, and an old bill in your possession no longer matches the current record. If your number returns an error, check for a more recent bill, an SMS alert, or contact your DISCO's sub-division office to confirm your current reference or consumer number.

Enter your number and check your bill
