Why Pakistani Consumers Are Switching to Solar โ€” Key Facts

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Bill Reduction

Net-metered solar can reduce a domestic electricity bill by 50โ€“90% depending on consumption pattern, system size, and the applicable DISCO tariff slab.

๐Ÿ“‹

Net Metering Policy

NEPRA's net metering framework allows residential and commercial consumers to export excess solar generation to the grid and receive bill credits at buy-back rates set per distribution company.

โ˜€๏ธ

Pakistan Solar Resource

Pakistan has one of the highest solar irradiance levels in South Asia โ€” 5.5 to 6.5 kWh/mยฒ/day across most of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan โ€” making payback periods shorter than in many Western markets.

โšก

Grid Stability & Sizing

Correct system sizing requires knowing your monthly kWh load, peak demand hours, and approved DISCO interconnection capacity. Over-sized systems face export restrictions; under-sized miss savings targets.

How Net Metering Works

Pakistan Net Metering in 4 Steps โ€” From NEPRA Approval to Bill Credit

01

NEPRA & DISCO Approval

Apply to your DISCO for net metering under NEPRA's 2015 Net Metering Regulations (updated 2023). Your DISCO reviews system size, inverter specifications, and grid stability impact before issuing an interconnection agreement.

02

Bi-Directional Meter Installation

Your DISCO installs a bi-directional (import/export) meter that records both the units you consume from the grid and the units your solar system exports to it.

03

Monthly Netting Calculation

Each month, your exported units are valued at the NEPRA-notified buy-back rate for your DISCO and subtracted from your consumption charges. Net units billed = units imported โˆ’ (exported units ร— buy-back rate / tariff rate).

04

Annual Rollover or Payment

Excess credits accumulated over the year are either rolled forward to the next period or paid out at the buy-back rate, depending on your DISCO's current net metering agreement terms.

โ„น
Educational only: These guides provide general information based on NEPRA regulations and publicly available DISCO procedures. Net metering policies, tariff categories, and buy-back rates change periodically. Always verify current requirements with your DISCO and a NEPRA-registered installer before making purchasing decisions.
