Why Is My Electricity Bill So High This Month? 8 Common Reasons
A sudden spike in your electricity bill usually has one of a few explanations. Here's how to check units consumed, FPA, slab jumps, and meter errors before you complain.
A bill that jumps sharply from one month to the next is one of the most common complaints DISCOs receive - and most of the time the cause is one of a handful of explainable factors, not a billing error. Before filing a complaint, work through this checklist.
1. You Crossed a Tariff Slab
Pakistan's domestic tariff is stepped: once your monthly units cross a threshold (commonly 100, 200, 300, or 700 units), the higher per-unit rate applies to the entire month's consumption, not just the units above the line. A small increase in usage - one extra AC, a longer summer - can push the whole bill into a noticeably more expensive bracket.
2. Seasonal AC, Heater, or Geyser Usage
Summer months (May-August) and winter heating season (November-February) are when bills jump the most. Air conditioners, geysers, and room heaters are the single largest consumers in most homes - even a few extra hours of daily use adds up fast across a 30-day billing cycle.
3. Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA)
FPA is a variable, NEPRA-determined surcharge that moves with fuel costs and can change every month - sometimes significantly. If your units consumed are similar to last month but the total amount is much higher, FPA is often the reason. See our dedicated FPA guide for exactly how this charge is calculated.
4. Estimated or Delayed Meter Reading
If a meter reader couldn't access your property, some DISCOs bill an estimated amount based on your consumption history, then correct it (up or down) on the next actual reading. Two consecutive high bills followed by a credit adjustment is a common pattern in this case - compare the 'reading type' field if your bill shows one.
5. A Faulty or Slow-Recording Meter
Old electromechanical meters occasionally run fast, and newly installed smart meters can record differently than the unit they replaced. If consumption has jumped without any real change in household usage or appliances, request a meter accuracy test from your DISCO's sub-division office.
6. Unpaid Arrears Carried Forward
If a previous bill was paid late or partially, the outstanding balance plus a Late Payment Surcharge (LPS) is added to the current bill. What looks like a huge new charge is sometimes last month's dues catching up.
7. New Appliances or a New Household Member
A new AC, deep freezer, water pump, or an additional family member living at home all raise baseline consumption permanently - not just for one billing cycle. Track your monthly units for two to three months to see if the increase is a new normal.
8. Electricity Theft on a Shared Line
In some areas, unauthorized connections tapping a shared line or transformer can inflate readings for legitimate consumers. If none of the above explanations fit and the increase is dramatic, ask your DISCO to inspect the line as well as your own meter.
What to Do Next
Start by checking your official duplicate bill on CheckBillsOnline.pk and comparing 'units consumed' against the previous two to three months. If the units are genuinely unchanged but the amount jumped, FPA or arrears are the likely cause. If units themselves spiked with no explanation, request a meter check through your DISCO's complaint process.
